The two main types of igneous rock are intrusive and extrusive rock. Intrusive rock could include diorite. Diorite is a coarse-grained rock that contains a mixture of feldspar, pyroxene, hornblende and quartz. An example of extrusive rock could be andesite. Andesite is a fine-grained rock composed mainly of plagioclase with other minerals.
The two main types of metamorphic rocks are foliated and non-foliated. A foliated metamorphic rock could be gniess. Gneiss is a rock that has a banded appearance and is made up of granular mineral grains. A non-foliated metamorphic rock is marble. Marble is produced from the metamorphism of limestone.
Two main types of sedimentary rocks are clastic and chemical sedimentary rocks. An example of clastic is breccia. Breccia is composed of large angular fragments. An example of chemical is limestone. Limestone is a rock that is composed of calcium carbonate.
